Fool Me Once by Sam Crescent

Leah has grown up in the care system, which is where she learned to trust no one and how to fight. This comes in handy when fends off an attack by the son of a ruthless gangster.

When the gangster, Cain, hears of what his useless son has done, he offers Leah a deal: to work for him, do what he says and wear the clothes he picks out on her curvy body. Over time the attraction between them grows until it gets physical… and complicated.

This is a book about a girl who is angry at the world, but a romantic at heart, and a guy who is supposed to be in control but does a stupid thing. I found their characters a bit odd.

Nothing world changing here. I’m not sure what we’re meant to admire and respect about the characters. That they can fight and be violent? That they don’t give money to corrupt ‘charities’? That they look out for their friends? That she treats the staff with respect? Seems like a low bar – expect more, girl!
