Up and coming basketball star August sees Iris in a bar and loves the way she’s yelling at the ref on the TV ball game. And they get talking about what matters in life. Two amazing people who are going to fall in love. Sounds like a lovely beginning to a romance novel. I’m in!
The problem is that Iris already has a boyfriend who dishes out all manner of domestic abuse on our Iris. A chilling portrayal of the isolation, violence, control, threats, sexual abuse, mental abuse and gaslighting.
It’s an excellent response to anyone who says “why didn’t she just leave”.
This is a really tough read and there are lines and images from the book that will stick with you for a long time. Iris does get her Happy Ever After. But it was so hard to hear all the horrible things that happened in her life.
I gave this 2 stars because I am reading for fun. This is not fun. It’s pain, sorrow and despair. It’s gut wrenching. There were positive things that happened in the book but I don’t really remember them.
Having said all that, it’s a good book if you want to understand these important issues.

Will it change the world?
It breaks my heart to think of all the women out there who live with this and I pray they can escape too. You can support them at the Women’s Aid website.
